WDW is it really the happiest place on earth?
4/27/2004

When did we all become so cranky at WDW? We’ve all been there, at the park enjoying ourselves when all of a sudden it happens. You know what I’m talking about; someone does something that can completely ruin your fun or even your day. On my last several trips to the so-called happiest place on earth people have been less than happy. I have been yelled at, cut in line, seen rampant fast pass abuse, smashed into with a stroller, seen parents screaming at kids, people yelling at CM’s and my personal favorite is when a group of people just stops. When I say stops I mean no matter where they are they just stop. If you’re behind them oh well. If you’re in the middle of taping something or taking a picture oh well. People where downright rude. Rushing from attraction to attraction with their kids or fellow travelers, who cares if someone’s in the way knock’em out! It’s happened to all of us. I am unfortunately the type that after three or four times of something like this happening I get mad. I hate to admit it but it drives me nuts. It’s something that I have to work on. You know count to ten take several deep breaths.

In this day and age of multi tasking and getting the most for your money people run around the park like there seizing a new country. You go this way get fast passes, you go this way get snacks, you go this way and wait in line for Buzz Light Year. Where of course they all meet up and proceed to cut everyone in front of them by saying “oh I’m with them”. I just love that. I even saw people steal strollers from each other so they don’t have to pay the seven dollars. Hey if you can’t spring for the $7 bucks you’ve got bigger issues. Like why are you at WDW?

People get worked up about there trips. I know I do. Those of us who really love the world and all that it offers, plan and plan and plan. My husband thinks I’m crazy. I have all the books, am a member to several Disney boards and I want my trip to be perfect. We all want to go and stay at a great resort while saving money. We know all the tricks with codes and AP passes. But what we need to remember is that once you are at WDW it’s a VACATION. Yes say it again VACATION. You are supposed to relax and enjoy yourself and the company of your fellow travelers, whether that is family or friends. I could not tell you how many times I saw people arguing over what to do next. “Well get out the book honey”. Here it comes people whip out the Unofficial guide and pull out the “Dumbo in day commando page for touring MK” and yes they have small children with them. (Very few 3 and 4 year olds can go commando from opening to closing everyday) By mid afternoon these kids are screaming and yelling which causes parent to melt down.

I was reviewing video from our last trip. We are parked on Main Street waiting for Spectro. We all know that if you want that spot you have to wait at least an hour and camp out for it. The CM’s start roping off areas and they have those red airport like wands waving people around. Sit down, find a spot, or leave the park. I have the camera ready and ten minutes before the parade starts a couple tries to force there way in saying, “can my daughter squeeze in”. Well there’s no room but she pushes her way up there anyway and disrupts everyone in the area, knocking another child over and ruining several peoples pictures. All the while a CM is telling her and her husband that there’s no room find another spot and move on. We all know what happens next don’t we? The guy freaks out.

Shawn and I at my “magical moment”.

I am a huge Alice in Wonderland freak, we come around the corner and there she is at the Tea Cups. I grab the autograph book and run yes I’m 29 and I was running. I wait and wait I finally get my turn my husband is snapping pictures and is using the video camera, my son is talking to Alice, its my MAGICAL MOMENT and then its ruined by some other people yelling hurry my kids want a turn. I wasn’t even there 2 minutes. I start rushing my son Shawn. Alice says, “don’t mind that where almost done”. The CM escorting them says “Miss you haven’t been here to long take your time”. People are so brutal with meeting characters. Hey everyone wants their kids to meet their favorite character, its part of the “magic”. Unfortunately it doesn’t always happen.

People berate CM’s for everything. Why cant I sit here, OMG this line is crazy, what do you mean you don’t have my size, and I have a PS why is this taking so long. For the most part CM’s are there to make the magic happen they want you to “be our guest”. They are here to make us all as happy as possible. I have 8 years retail management experience and you should really treat people in service they way you would want to be treated. If your freaking out on a CM do you really think that makes them want to help you ? Umm no I don’t think so. What it comes down to is that when we go to WDW we want to have the best time we all can. We want that MAGICAL experience. People need to chill out. We have all paid a lot of money to come here and enjoy all that the world offers with our loved ones. I mean does it hurt to be considerate of others? What are we teaching our kids? It’s ok to be rude and obnoxious? If everyone just relaxed a little I think all the pushing, arguing, carriage crashing and stopping anywhere you want would cease to exist. Then it really would be the happiest place on earth.
