A Response to Should there be a Disney on The Walt Disney Company Board?
12/20/2004

Here is just one letter I have received about this article in favor of keeping a Disney family member on The Walt Disney Company Board of Directors. I can tell from the response that many people feel there should be a Disney family member on the board.

Dear Gavin,
I appreciate your coverage of the move to introduce a proposal to keep a Disney family member on the Board of Directors. As a shareholder with a sizeable amount of Disney stock, I totally agree with Mr. Wierenga; and I'm sure the majority of the stockholders, including Disney enthusiasts, Disney Cast members, and retirement fund investors feel the same way, too.

I think the votes from the last election proved the stockholders ARE very unhappy with past performance and continuing lack of concern for the wishes of the stockholders by the Board of Directors and upper management of Disney. If anyone needs to be put through "Disney Traditions and Orientation", it should be the present Disney management.

As for the "Vote Against" recommendation of the Disney Board of Directors, I will quote from the first line of their second paragraph. "The Board of Directors is responsible for nominating candidates for the Board that it believes will best represent the interests of all shareholders." My reply to this sentence, "They sure haven't done so for quite a long while."

I knew Walt and Roy, and I'm sure they wouldn't like what has been done to their company in the last 10 years. I can't think of anything more appropriate as a "step in the right direction" to restoring the Disney Magic, and making the company profitable again to its stockholders, as keeping a Disney family member on the Board of Directors (or maybe better yet, the CEO of the Disney Company).

Sincerely,
Richard Cauldwell
