Ice Princess – A Review
3/23/2005

Though I was told that the Ice Princess was a "tween age" chick flick, I went to this movie with 4 other adult friends. We are all over 45, mom's, grandmoms and even a guy. We all enjoyed the movie. One friend said it was better than a lot of the movies we've seen recently. And this group of friends of mine goes to see movies A LOT! None of us felt it was JUST a young girl's chick flick.

I enjoyed watching the parenting choices the 2 mom's made as well as their interaction with their daughters. I've also been in more than one sport or art either as a child or as the mom that was highly competitive with some very interesting "stage moms". So I could relate to the situations these skaters were placed in. And though the girls were not Olympic skaters in real life, Disney did a good job in helping the audience to believe these actresses could REALLY skate.

Of course, it is just a movie and some of the plot choices are not exactly realistic. Probably the least realistic was the idea of driving a Zamboni across rural terrain. But it did get a chuckle from the audience. Hey! Its entertainment, not real life.

The acting was all very good. I happen to be something of a Joan Cusack fan and I enjoyed Michelle Trachtenberg very much. I did find it hard to believe that she could ever be a homely nobody but she did play "shy" very well. Hayden Panettiere stole every scene she was in. This is the same little girl from "Remember the Titans" and the voice of Dot in "A Bug's Life". I think she's turned into a beautiful young lady and quite the actress.

As a mom: I really enjoyed this movie. It is rated G and has nothing I found objectional in it. I'm even going back again today and taking my 14 year old son along with me. I've promised him it is not a cheesy chick flick, which it's not.

As an adult: I also really enjoyed Ice Princess. There were characters I could relate to besides the teen age girl. Personally, I felt both moms were out of line but the plot resolved itself well. There is a great deal more substance to this movie than others I've seen recently of its genre. The audience all seemed to enjoy it, too. I gave it an 85.

Here is a Disney Insider article about the making of the movie.
