Eight Below - A Review
2/8/2006

Living in the land which is the home to the Iditarod and many other sled dog races and where sled dogs are our favorite athletes, Eight Below's sneak peek played to a packed crowd. Eight Below is a beautiful movie that will appeal to just about everyone. There are sad parts and funny parts. The scenery is beautiful! The dogs are amazing!!! I really have to say that though the human actors performed well, the dogs really steal the show. They are amazing!!! I suppose I already said that but it is worth saying again.

As an adult: I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I didn't bring a hanky and didn't need one though there are some heart warming and moving parts. My friend next to me, who happens to be the owner of several Huskies and a volunteer for the Iditarod, needed an entire package of tissues so, I'd suggest taking some tissue just in case. I was concerned about this being an animal movie and my possibly growing bored. I will say I was never bored. Eight Below moves well and makes a great transition between the dogs' story and their musher's story. Plus, the dogs were so well trained. Wow! This film was not shot in Antarctica which was a bit noticeable to me but much of the scenery was from actual Antarctica footage. That was fun. Overall, I'd have to give the photography and scenery top marks. And again...the dogs are AMAZING! I was thoroughly impressed with them.

As a parent: I wouldn't hesitate in taking my children to see this movie. In fact, I'm taking my teenage boys to see it this weekend. There were many young children in our audience and none of them had to leave the theatre. I'll just throw out a heads up that there are some sad and briefly scary parts in Eight Below. So keep that in mind with your very little ones.

I really enjoyed Eight Below. I highly recommend it. I hope everyone will go see it. Don't forget your hanky! Everyone I've talked to who saw the sneak peek both here in Anchorage and in other parts of the US have loved it.

Here is a link for a story behind the story for 2 of the dogs who performed in Eight Below. What a cool story!!!
