Trip report Veteran's Day at Disneyland
11/21/2006

By: Tina

Knowing how important the American way of Life was to Walt Disney, and the success of his company, Service members have always been acknowledged at Disneyland as Special Guests. But on Veteran's Day, so much more so.

Everyday at Disneyland Guests can watch the Flag Retreat Ceremony. But this year; during our time of war, Veteran's Day was held in special regard. On November 11th, any Guest who is a Veteran was invited to participate in the Parade down Main Street USA for the Flag Retreat. This was indeed quite a spectacle!! Disneyland President Ed Grier was in attendance, as a speaker for offering Thanks to all men and women who have served in all branches of Armed Forces Military for the United States of America. He followed from the quote on Disneyland's opening day dedication speech; the same still holds true ..."dedicated to the ideals, dreams and hard facts that have created America..."

Ed delivered his thanks to all Veterans in attendance and those currently serving. He further acknowledged that each of us might remember those families of our active duty service members on that day and during the holiday season.

The Ceremony was held at 4:30 p.m. in Town Square, the Disneyland Marching Band, and the Main Street vocal quartet was present to perform many songs of patriotism and to lead all Guests in the National Anthem. There were so many sharply dressed service members in their Class A uniforms in service to the Color Guard. Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard all present. You may have been surprised to notice just how many Veterans are also Cast Members!!

All Veterans present were called to the Flag Pole when their Service branch Hymn was played. The event was quite a wonderful experience, and so many Guests stated that they might not have had the opportunity to make an observance of the holiday without the Ceremony. Many people used their sleeves, some used napkins, and some just let their tears run as an expression of gratitude. It certainly was an unforgettable event.
