Disney's "Monsters Inc Comedy Club Show"...Soft Opening Review
1/12/2007

Well, with two new attractions already showing for the guests, "The Seas with Nemo and Friends" and "Finding Nemo, the Musical" the third in the trilogy of new shows; "Monsters Inc, Comedy Club Show" is not quite ready for the guests. I have heard that there were a few "Soft-Opening" shows, but they were few and far between. I have been in the Magic Kingdom almost daily trying to catch a show and today I hit pay dirt. At 2:00pm the doors opened and myself and maybe 100 other lucky people were led in to the queue line. As we waited, the area Manager kept reminding us that this was just a test rehearsal and there might be some glitches. We were also warned several times; NO video, NO pictures, NO flash photography and NO sound recording!

This was to be expected and I could not wait for this much talked about show to begin. The inside was a typical theatre setting, seats wrapped around in a "C" and the big screen in front. There was also a smaller monitor screen on the upper left and another screen with a door in front of it on the upper right where Mike Wazowski appears. A large cylindrical tube, also on the right would register the laughter for the city of Monstropolis.

That is the premise of the Comedy Club, hosted by our favorite monster, Mike Wazowski. The more laughs registered, the more power for the city. Now since everything here is still in the trial stage, before the guests entered, a cast member went around asking for jokes to tell on the show. The show opened with Buddy Boil, who kept asking for votes for the funniest Monster, than the two-headed monster, Mac and Cheese came on and started interacting with the guests. The main screen is just like "Turtle Talk with Crush" in EPCOT, where the monsters can talk and joke with the audience.

The whole idea of the Club is that the monsters will pick someone out of the audience and joke and ask them questions, and most of the participants were children, which was very funny when some of the younger ones were asked where they lived and such. The monsters also told jokes, but they were really old chestnuts such as "Why did the monster throw his alarm clock out the window?", and the answer of course was "To see time fly". There was also some visual gags with the monsters, like when Buddy Boil kept stepping on the floorboards and they came up and hit him in the face while he was talking etc. At the end of the show, Mike Wazowski told some of the jokes that the guests provided in the queue line earlier.

From the guests reaction to the show, and myself included, I think that Disney will have a winner on their hands. One must remember that comedy is one of the hardest things to do. And since the show is still being tested and tweaked by the cast members, it can and probably will change much before being officially opened in the spring. At the end of the show, the manager asked the guests to remain for a few minutes and he asked several questions on the show and gauged the response by how many hands were raised to the questions. As of now, the show will appeal more to the kids than adults, mainly for the jokes told, but the adults seemed very satisfied and I thought is was pretty funny. Again, humor is very hard to gauge and what's funny to one won't be funny to the next. Only time will tell how it will be received, I just hope I can catch another "Soft-Opening" review to see if any changes were made.
