Spaceship Earth...Soft Opening Review
12/14/2007

I have heard that Disney was having occasional soft openings of Spaceship Earth for a few weeks, but every time we arrived, we either just missed it or the attraction was closed for the day. We were very lucky at Mousefest when we saw a line gathering, so we tried once more. Bingo, after only waiting an hour and a half, the doors opened and the crowds eagerly entered.

Do not expect a major overhaul in the attraction, not like in the Haunted Mansion. Yes, there are some scenes that have changed (For the better I might add) but overall the major changes are in the new audio-animatronics, or the addition of some to already existing scenes. The whole audio portion of the show is much improved, with a woman now narrating the ride ( I asked several cast members who it was, but no one seemed to know). Her voice is much clearer and louder than before. Right off seasoned riders will note how much brighter the scenes are and the new animatronics move much more life-like than their predecessors. And sharp-eyed observers will note many "Little changes".

The Imagineers did a fantastic job of scene restoration. Along with the new audio-animatronics, the props and scenery appear as if they also received a fresh makeover, all the colors are vibrant, and everything stands out better, even in low-light scenes. The major portion of the ride changes as the "Time Machine" rotates backwards and you get to answer questions on an interactive touch-screen in the ride vehicle. I do not want to say anymore, rather than spoil the surprise, but remember in soft opening mode, anything can still change before official opening time. I intend to return later this week and see if I can get lucky and ride again.
