We took our Disney World Vacation in 2002. The second time for my husband and I, but the first time with our 3 year old son. We were very excited to visit the Animal Kingdom being the newest park and all. We chose to take our trip in October we went for 9 nights over Halloween.
Let me just start by saying anyone who plans to go Disney World in October, you will have it made! No lines no crowds and the weather was even good. Anyways we arrived 15 minutes before the park opened; we were not surprised to see lines at the gate, however we were pleasantly surprised to see that Donald Duck, Daisy, Mickey, Minnie and Goofy all came out in front of the gates and performed this little act passing jars back and forth with insects in them, and waving and blowing kisses to the lines of people. Which was entertaining for kids, or should I say the kids that could see.
Then it was time and the gates opened and in we went. Of course it was a solid 98 degrees with humidity at 10 A.M. and as we proceeded to walk into DinoLand U.S.A., I began noticing that there was NO SHADE! But I didn't want to stress out yet because we were headed to our reservation for a character breakfast in Donald’s restaurant in DinoLand.
Right away we noticed the arrangements in the restaurant where so Cafeteria like. The food honestly was rough. But the character interaction was one of the best! However $58.00 later for 2 adults and a child, I felt a little ripped off but DinoLand was impressive! My son was thrilled, he loves dinosaurs.
Right outside the restaurant was a crocodile pit with 2 really big croc's. My son was so happy! The rides were different, there was a kids playground area with dino bones and slides and tunnels; my husband and son spent about 40 minutes just in there.
Again I was on the search for shade. But still I found none. We moved on to Primeval Whirl, looks interesting however our son was to short to ride, as we took a closer look it was a roller coaster you can control by spinning it as it goes on the track. We opted out since our son was to short. But we did make like a bee to ride Dinosaur! The second best ride in the park! This is a do not pass up ride. Again my son was to short, but we did the rider switch pass so my husband and I could ride.
It was very similar to Indiana Jones, same jeep, same type of ride. You're indoors and you go back in time to save a dinosaur. Very cool ride, lots of scary parts with dino's popping out and very loud. We loved it!
We then made our way to Discovery Island the parks center, this hosts the "Tree of Life" which is amazing,(you can get great pictures of it from Africa or Asia). Inside the "Tree of Life" is "It's tough to be bug." One of our favorites in Disney’s California Adventure so we went on, it's exactly the same. However this was my break from the heat and the beating sun.
We came out of "It's tough to be a bug" and proceeded into Africa for what would host the best ride in the park, The Kilimanjaro Safari. Let me just say it's about 15 minutes long and worth every minute. We were so amazed, that ride alone made the day worth it! I cannot believe the animals we saw. The ride is based on elephant poachers and you’re on a tour trying to save this little elephant. In the mean time you get to see all sorts of animals. We saw crocodiles, elephants, all kinds of birds, giraffes, lion, jaguar, hippos, and gorillas. We were so taken by it. You’re even in a real safari jeep!
We moved in to Asia which has its big ride being the Kali River Rapids, but we aren't big on wet rides so we passed moving on now looking for lunch. There were little fast food places in the different lands where you eat outside but at this point I was getting sick from the heat and no shade that I wanted a sit down restaurant.
To our surprise there up by the front gate was the Rainforest Cafe. So that's where we ate. After lunch we went to Rafiki's Planet Watch, you take a train to get there inside the park. It was very educational, and to our surprise our son loved it. We saw bats and birds and small monkeys and my son got to hold a dried piece of elephant poop! (Of course they didn't tell us that until after he had it in his hands) Straight to the restroom we ran!
My son can't stand to be dirty! After that we made our way back to the front gate hoping to catch the parade however we caught the end of it. My son showed little interest in the Tarzan Rocks show so we skipped it and went back into Africa to see the animal exhibits.
We headed out about 5 P.M. since the park closes about then. We went back to the hotel to cool off and shower. My opinion on the park is it was really impressive, but the shade factor was awful. I got the worst sun burn on my head that day, worst I'd ever had. But was it worth it? YES! Overall the park has good rides and then they have a few E ticket rides that are nothing like we've seen before.....That's what was so impressive, the park itself is great.
