Dining Around The World..."The Plaza Restaurant"

The Plaza Restaurant is one of the Magic Kingdom's best "All-around" eateries. In this, I mean it is the easiest to just walk up, get a table (Usually around lunch) and what my wife and I refer to as a "Hybrid" the best combination of table service, and counter-service venues. For just a little more than you would pay for counter-service meals, you can enjoy some well-prepared and hearty sandwiches, a fantastic Chicken strawberry salad, ice cream, floats and mouth-watering desserts all in a themed turn-of-the century atmosphere. Unless it is super crowded, one can usually secure a table around lunch with little wait, dinnertime, again if the crowds are not overwhelming you can get in without the usual reservations that most of the table-service restaurants require.

The restaurant is at the end of Main St. right around the corner of the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor. It is a great place to meet for that quick lunch and pick-me-up, it is cozy and relaxing, and the turn of the century atmosphere makes you want to slow down a bit and have that extra cup of coffee.

I usually gage any eatery by four standards…Atmosphere, Food, Service, and Value. One of the best features we love about the place is the Dining room. Unlike many of the Disney table service restaurants, this is small. It rather reminds you of the old-fashioned corner drug store luncheonettes, but a little fancier. There are ornate mirrors all around; wrought iron chairs (Green!) fancy chandeliers, neat table settings, and all had a small vase with a flower in it. There were also great views of the Castle from almost all the tables. As with all the themed restaurants, the waiters and waitresses had on period clothing, all adding to the experience.

On to the food. I normally do not care if I pay a lot for a meal, as long as the portions reflect the size of the bill. Here the Plaza restaurant does not fail. Their sandwiches are big. You will not go away hungry. My wife loves the Grilled Reuben; this classic is loaded with lean corned-beef with all the trimmings on fresh grilled marble rye bread. I love the Chicken Strawberry salad, the Strawberry dressing is fantastic (You can get the recipe-I did!) It has plenty of chucks of chicken in it. If you love hamburgers, the Angus Chuck Cheeseburger is the choice. This is not a counter-service burger, but thick and juicy with your choice of toppings. Another of our favorites is the Turkey Sandwich. Bacon, lettuce, smoked turkey on multi-grain bread with a side of German potato salad; it is a meal in itself.

The Plaza Restaurant is famous for its great dessert menu, and like the main course, it will not disappoint. From the fountain, you can have ice cream floats, hand-dipped milkshakes, and a fine choice of ice-cream flavors. Desserts include a Brownie Sundae, the huge Plaza Restaurant Sundae, Banana split, New-York style Cheesecake (My wife's favorite!) an Apple Charlotte and the "Mickeylodeon" rainbow sherbet complete with Mickey Mouse chocolate ears and cone hat. Beverages include complimentary free refills on coffee, soft drinks, and teas. Evian and Perrier waters are also offered. There is a children's menu, and for $7.49 they can get an appetizer, tomato soup, an entrée, Grilled chicken, peanut butter and jelly, grilled chicken on a stick, chef salad, two mini hamburgers, turkey sandwich and a grilled cheese sandwich. Drinks include, water, juice, and milk.

The service here is excellent. We always get into a great conversation with our waiter or waitress. The wait staff at Disney eateries to me always seems a cut above. I drink gallons of coffee and know I have a great server when I do not have to look around for a refill.

The value here at the Plaza is also the best on property. For an average of $12.00, you are going to have a great lunch or dinner, and go away with a full stomach. The best part I enjoy about the Plaza is that after your meal, you can have that second or third cup of coffee, not feel like you are being pushed out and just slow down a bit, well at least until you get out into the parks again. I highly recommend the Plaza. The Restaurant takes the Disney Dining Plan and the Disney Dining Experience plan.
