Disneyland is the Disney Companies flagship theme park. This was the first park that was built and opened July 1955. It continues to grow to this day and is one of California’s hottest theme park destinations.

Could Wakefield be twin of Walt Disney World?

A trip to Disney World in Florida is up for grabs for schoolchildren in Wakefield with a vivid imagination.

Disney has launched a country wide competition to search for a place in the UK to twin with Walt Disney World Florida.

Council chiefs in Wakefield are encouraging youngsters to enter and explain why they think the district could be a contender.

Wakefield Council's Chief Executive Joanne Roney said: "Wakefield is a place that celebrates its traditions, appeals to people of all ages, looks to the future, is family friendly, and is full of inspirational people.

"This is just what Disney is looking for as this is not about having theme parks and famous cartoon characters. As Walt Disney himself once said: 'you can dream, create, design, and build the most wonderful place in the world . . . but it requires people to make the dream a reality'.

"I hope schools and young people will have fun entering this UK-wide competition which can only help promote the district even wider."

Youngsters in Wakefield can nominate the district by entering online.

Entrants have to upload a picture, video, drawing or even a poem explaining why Wakefield should be twinned with Disney.

The competition winner will be jetting off to Walt Disney World in Florida to see the twinning ceremony. Wakefield would also win a once in a lifetime Disney holiday party in January.
