Ruffian trainer Frank Whiteley, jockey Jacinto Vasquez and a company called Thoroughbred Legends have filed a lawsuit against Disney, ESPN, ABC and Orly Adelson Productions over inaccurate portrayal of events in the movie version of "Ruffian," which airs Saturday on KABC/7, the Daily Racing Form reports.
The suit claims Thoroughbred Legends owns the trademark to the name "Ruffian," Whiteley and Vasquez are part-owners of the Ruffian name, and the movie's producers did not obtain the rights to use the name.
Bloomberg News also reports that Whiteley and Vasquez rejected offers to sell their life stories to ESPN for $5,000 apiece.
In a statement, ESPN says: "The claims of the lawsuit are without merit." Ron Semiao, senior vice president of ESPN Original Entertainment, also said: "Bill Nack is one of the most respected and revered sportswriters of all time. We stand by his reputation and the quality of the production."
