Seven people with interesting ties to Walt Disney's Magic Kingdom will be in Oakhurst Aug. 1-3 for the Ninth Annual Disney Daze celebration, sponsored by the Yosemite-Oakhurst-Sierra 49ears chapter of the National Fantasy Fan Club, an organization for Disney enthusiasts.
Proceeds from the event will fund college scholarships for area youth and support other organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club and the Children's Museum of the Sierra.
This year's lineup of speakers includes Margaret Kerry, the original studio model for the Tinker Bell animated film character; Virginia Davis, who starred in a series of short Disney films with animated co-stars who were precursors to characters such as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck; and artist and animator Ron Dias.
Also appearing will be Maggie Elliott, retired senior vice president for Walt Disney Imagineering and the daughter of Richard Irvine, who designed all the Disneyland structures; Michael Broggie, son of Roger Broggie, who designed the train layouts at Walt Disney's home and Disneyland; Garner Holt, creator of Animatronics figures for Disney and other clients; and Tony Baxter, the current senior vice president of Imagineering for Disney.
Disney Daze was expanded from one to three days this year to give fans more time to mingle with the guest speakers, says Disney Daze co-chairman Bill Atwood.
The "mini-convention" begins Aug. 1 at the Evergreen Conference Center with a 4:30 p.m. reception, followed by dinner at 6. The speaker that evening will be Holt, president and founder of Garner Holt Productions.
Holt's San Bernardino company has built animated electronic figures, special effects sets, scenery, show-action equipment and show-control systems for movie studios, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and corporate and private clients such as Chuck E. Cheese's restaurants and Michael Jackson.
The Aug. 2 schedule kicks off with breakfast at 8 a.m., followed by a show and sale of Disney collectibles that will last until 4 p.m. Speakers will appear in three other rooms during the show and sale.
Davis will make the first presentation at 10 a.m., followed by Holt at 11, Kerry, Dias and Baxter at 1 p.m., Broggie and Holt at 2 and Elliott at 3.
Travel agents and local Fantasy Fan Club members also will present sessions on topics such as popular Disney vacation destinations and, for nostalgia buffs, Disneyland attractions that have been discontinued.
The day concludes with a wine tasting at 4:30 p.m. followed by a dinner at 6 p.m., at which Baxter will be the speaker.
Baxter started scooping ice cream at Disneyland when he was 17 and worked his way up the management ladder.
He currently is in charge of creative development for the park.
Baxter supervised the creation of such Disneyland attractions as the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Splash Mountain, the Indiana Jones Adventure and the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage.
Disney Daze concludes on Aug. 3 with an 8 a.m. breakfast with the Disney speakers. Admission to the show and sale is also good for admission to sessions with the Disney speakers on Aug. 2.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner tickets are $17-$45. Ticket packages featuring a variety of meal and lodging options may be purchased in advance.
