Who’s ready for a magical Movie Night at the Museum? Mark your calendars for May 28th, when Disney’s enchanting classic, “Fantasia”, will dazzle audiences once again on the big screen at the Northwest Montana History Museum. This event promises an evening filled with beautiful music, whimsical dancing animals, waltzing flowers, and, of course, the iconic Mickey Mouse as the sorcerer’s apprentice.
Walt Disney initially envisioned this project in 1938 as a “Silly Symphony” cartoon starring Mickey Mouse. However, it soon blossomed into a full-length animated masterpiece featuring a groundbreaking sound system known as Fantasound. Developed by Disney and RCA, this innovation made “Fantasia” the first commercial film to be shown in stereo sound. For countless Americans, it was their first introduction to the world of classical music. The 1940 production boasts eight stunning animated segments set to classical compositions conducted by the illustrious Leopold Stokowski.
Although warmly received by critics upon release, “Fantasia” struggled financially due to the loss of European markets during World War II. Nevertheless, it has enjoyed numerous reissues since 1942 and is now celebrated as one of the finest American films. In fact, the American Film Institute ranks it as the 58th greatest American movie ever made, while the Library of Congress has preserved it for its cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance to the nation.
Make sure to arrive early, as doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the film begins promptly at 7 p.m. at 124 Second Ave. E., Kalispell. Admission and popcorn are completely free, while soda, water, beer, and wine are available for purchase. Comfortable seating will be provided, though you’re welcome to bring your own cushions or seating if you prefer.
