This week in 1967, the magic started to take shape as Walt Disney World officially broke ground in Florida! Today, to commemorate this historic moment, we delve into the archives to share a few rare and vintage images of the early days of Disney World’s construction. This journey through time provides a fascinating glimpse into one of the world’s most beloved destinations.

One captivating image from the Walt Disney Archives Photo Library reveals the construction of the iconic Cinderella Castle, which was among the first structures to rise on the site. This architectural marvel, built with nearly 280 tons of steel and other materials, stood spectacular from its very beginning. You can even spot the future location of “it’s a small world” and the early structure of the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea in the background—a testament to the grand vision unfolding.

As the construction progressed, Magic Kingdom Park began to take shape, featuring experiences reminiscent of Disneyland but with unique attractions such as The Country Bear Jamboree. At a 1969 press event, guests, including none other than Mickey Mouse himself, got a first look at the blueprints and scale models of Disney World. This event even saw Disney leaders like Roy O. Disney signing autographs and sharing their excitement for the park’s opening date, set for October 1, 1971.

Fast forward to today, Walt Disney World has grown immensely with the addition of EPCOT in 1982, Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 1989, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park in 1998. Each of these expansions has added layers of magic, making Walt Disney World a must-visit destination for millions. The park’s evolution continues to fuel Florida’s economy, support small businesses, and contribute to nonprofit organizations doing amazing work in the community.

Looking ahead, this summer promises to be magical with new and exciting events across the Resort. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure will bring a taste of New Orleans to Magic Kingdom, while Disney Springs will host “Disney Dreams that Soar” featuring dazzling drone choreographies. At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Pixar’s Joy will join Pixar Plaza just in time for “Inside Out 2,” and Disney’s Animal Kingdom will celebrate the 30th anniversary of “The Lion King” with special events throughout the park.

We’re excited to share these glimpses of the past and future of Walt Disney World. What are your thoughts? Are you as thrilled as we are about the new experiences coming this summer?
