In recent months, Disney Cruise Line has been under intense scrutiny due to disturbing incidents involving several crew members. Federal agents at Port Everglades, one of the nation’s busiest cruise ports, have arrested three Disney Cruise employees on charges related to child pornography in just three months. These incidents have put a spotlight on the industry and raised questions about the adequacy of crew member screenings.

The most recent arrest is that of Tirso Neri, a 44-year-old crew member on the Disney Dream. On December 18, 2023, upon the ship’s arrival at Port Everglades, federal agents searched Neri’s cellphones and discovered numerous explicit photographs and videos of young children. Neri admitted to downloading adult content through group chats on Telegram and Facebook, but claimed he unknowingly saved and did not review folders containing illicit material.

Before Neri’s arrest, two other Disney Dream crew members were detained in January. Amiel Joseph Trazo, 28, was apprehended after investigators found graphic content involving children on his devices, following nine tips from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). In another case, Alvin Gonzales, 49, was charged when a search revealed child porn on his Micro SD card, though the charge was later dropped for lack of evidence.

These incidents add to a growing list of sexual misconduct cases in the cruise industry, including recent allegations against a Celebrity Cruises counselor. According to a U.S. Department of Transportation report, there were 131 alleged sexual assaults on cruise ships in 2023, up from 87 in 2022. Cruise Lines International Association defends the industry, attributing these numbers to increased passengers and new ships.

These troubling reports have many questioning whether current screening processes for cruise ship employees are sufficient. We’d love to hear your thoughts on this serious issue.
