Ryan Reynolds recently expressed his surprise and delight over Disney allowing “Deadpool and Wolverine” to maintain its hard R rating. In a video interview with Fandango, Reynolds shared his astonishment about Disney’s decision. Since Disney acquired Fox, there was skepticism from fans about whether the famously raunchy “Deadpool” series would continue its legacy under Disney’s family-friendly umbrella. However, Reynolds and director Shawn Levy were given the green light to keep the edgy humor that fans adore.

Reflecting on Disney’s move, Reynolds commented, “I hope it doesn’t sound condescending, but I’m really proud of them for doing this. It’s a significant step for a company that has been synonymous with family entertainment.” He further emphasized that adding this R-rated flavor brings a new spectrum to Disney’s diverse portfolio. Reynolds also acknowledged the challenge but affirmed, “There’s no other way to do it.”

“Deadpool and Wolverine” holds a distinct place as it not only blends the irreverent humor of Deadpool with the grit of Wolverine but also marks Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine. Jackman’s last portrayal of Wolverine was in the R-rated “Logan,” a critical and commercial hit that set high expectations for mature storytelling. Pairing Deadpool and Wolverine in a family-friendly setting was out of the question.

Shawn Levy, director of the film, assured that the movie is crafted for pure entertainment and is accessible to both hardcore fans and casual viewers. He mentioned, “I didn’t want to presume that people would come in with extensive knowledge about these characters. This movie is made to entertain without the need for homework.”

As for continuity, Jackman has promised fans that this Wolverine is different from the one who met his fate in “Logan.” This assurance keeps the sanctity of that beloved film intact while allowing space for fresh storytelling.

“Deadpool and Wolverine” will hit theaters on July 26. Catch the full interview with Reynolds, Jackman, and Levy on Fandango’s platform.
