At Disney, every animal birth is a momentous occasion, but the arrival of a rare and critically endangered baby addax as a special Mother’s Day gift at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is simply magical! We’re delighted to introduce Julien, the newest and tiniest member of our addax family, who stands just over two feet tall with a head full of fluffy fur. Born to mom Juniper and dad Allen, Julien’s name is a heartfelt blend of his parents’ names, and he is the first male calf born at the resort.
Why is Julien’s birth so incredibly significant? The addax, a species of antelope known for its distinctive curly horns, faces the grim reality of possible extinction with fewer than 100 individuals roaming in the wild and just over 180 under the care of institutions accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). Hence, each birth offers a glimmer of hope for the species’ survival. At Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, guests have a unique opportunity to observe these majestic creatures thriving in a safe and nurturing environment.
Disney is one of only 21 AZA-accredited institutions caring for addaxes, actively participating in Species Survival Plans (SSP) to boost populations of endangered species. Our collaboration with global experts has made Julien’s birth possible and marks another milestone in our ongoing conservation efforts.
